The Art of Joanne Massingale
BLESSINGS: As an artist, my primary goal with my work is to impart a feeling of joy and excitement in the painting. The Blessing of the Animals provided just such an opportunty.
The crisp October air was permeated with the mouldering smell of downed leaves and damp grass. The fieldwas a riot of colors, sounds and sights that charged the air and sparked the senses. Dogs, cats, horses, birds and just about every other type of pet greeted each other with quiet voices, wagging tails and excited dances of unguarded curiosity and glee. These calls were lost in the sea of high-pitched children’s laughter and the bass resonance of parents and clergy as they coreographed the intracate yet fluid dance of animals, children and exuberant spirit.
White robes and colorful cassocks glinted throughout the crowd as priests and the bishop moved quietly about, sending sprays of holy water from fragrant pine boughs in blessing, gently reminding all of the blessed nature of the day.
Despite the menagerie of ages, vocations and species, the overall feeling was one of peace and it was this feeling that drew me to paint the images of the Blessing Series. I hope you can hear the voices, feel the happiness and enjoy a moment in time that was full of life and hope.
