The Art of Laura Gable

Inspiration for my artwork, like most artists, is driven by visual stimuli. I love art galleries and can spend hours absorbed by the paintings of the masters—held breathless by their painted strokes of luminous color. Yet I am also moved by beautifully written prose, ethereal soulful music, and finding myself in the presence of other creative souls.

I find nature equally compelling and inspiring; the varied tones of autumn, silver moonglow on fresh snowfall, the emergence of spring, birdsong and gentle breezes. These inspirations find a voice in my art—from realistic paintings to abstract forms.

Of late, I have been inspired by the colors of sea and sky and the correlating pigments: aqua, turquoise, and cobalt teal and the complementary contrasts created when they are juxtaposed with shades of orange. These colors are well suited to the bird nest themed art I’ve been creating. Recently a friend gave me two nests made by her small domestic birds. These delicate creations of burlap fibers overlaid and wound together, provide the perfect haven for the tiny aqua eggs within. The nesting theme represents the circular way we nurture and are nurtured by those we love and care for.

Since 2001, my graphic design work evolved into creating art full time. I enjoy painting in oils and watercolor, and have become intrigued with the meditative qualities of scratchboard art and the creative challenge of book arts.
