Editor's Note
A glint of unexpected light draws my attention through the fading afternoon sun. The source: a spot of color in a muted gold frame. I gingerly wipe off decades of grime, and an image of a crisp fall day slowly emerges. Rich red, gold and green hues of late season foliage stand out against a bright afternoon sky.
I revel in how simple paint strokes evoke not just an picture, but also the smell of moldering leaves, a cool breeze against skin and the memory of a season shifting to the next. A final swipe of dust reveals the wispy hand of my great-grandmother’s signature, meandering through grassy hills behind. My eyes sting with tears and my heart aches for the familiarity of the woman I had known as many things: Grandmother, friend, matriarch of a family... but never had I known her as an artist.
What had the world missed while her artwork remained obscured behind inaccessibility and lack of opportunity?
Without a bridge or tangible connection to an audience, the fruits of artistic talent are often overlooked or remain undiscovered. The Northwest Gallery Collection is that link, a means to bring artists and their work, words and inspirations to a wider audience. Artists are presented with his or her current pieces in a collective gallery designed to intrigue readers with a glimpse into each artist’s creative world.
Enjoy listings of galleries and upcoming shows, links to web sites, blogs and social networking opportunities, even a gallery “store” at www.ShopTheParkway.com where you can purchase originals, framed prints, posters and greeting cards.
Art is invigorating, sparking our imagination, but with the power to bring a sense of peace.
Art is as diverse as a gentle portrayal of a spring flower and the electrifying reflections of polished metal.
My great-grandmother’s painting is a simple scene capturing a moment in her life with paint on canvas. When asked, I say it was created by a wonderful artist who brought her work to life through her experiences as a woman and friend. It is my joy to be the link that connects her art and experience to the world.
